Tala Madani & Nathaniel Mellors

PKM 갤러리는 3월 28일부터 5월 9일까지 이란 출신의 작가 탈라 마다니(Tala Madani, b.1981)와 영국 출신의 작가 나다니엘 멜로스(Nathaniel Mellors, b.1974)의 2인전을 개최한다. PKM 갤러리에서 선보이는 작가들의 국내 첫 전시에 탈라 마다니의 신작회화와 나다니엘 멜로스의 영상 및 조각작품이 공개되며, 오프닝리셉션을 위하여 작가부부가 방한할 예정이다.
세계미술계에서 폭발적인 주목을 받고 있는 탈라 마다니는 2000년대 초반부터 감각적이고 서사가 돋보이는 회화작업을 통하여 현대사회에 깊이 뿌리내린 문화 및 성적 아이덴터티에 대해 고찰해왔다. 단순화한 색채와 형상이 마치 만화드로잉 혹은 매거진삽화를 떠올리는 작가의 화면은 전통적으로 기대되어온 남성과 여성의 스테레오타입에서 벗어난 인물들을 묘사함으로써 사회구성원들이 공유하는 전통적 인식체계에 대하여 질문한다.
나다니엘 멜로스 역시 사회 내에서 통용되는 후천적이고 상대적인 관습을 주제 삼아 왔는데, 특히 연극성과 블랙유머가 돋보이는 영상과 텍스트, 퍼포먼스 작업들이 널리 알려져있다. 그중 22분 가량의 영상 는 네안데르탈인과 미래인간의 만남이라는 허구적인 연출을 시도하며 사회에 자리잡은 권력, 계급, 소통의 문제를 다룬다. 다양한 매체작업으로 문화와 권력의 역학관계에 관한 사회적 담화를 이끌어내온 나다니엘 멜로스는 이번 전시에도 영상 및 조각, 프린트 등 여러 장르의 작업을 선보인다.
나다니엘 멜로스는 옥스포드대학의 러스킨 스쿨오브 드로잉 앤 파인아트(The Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art)에서 학사학위를 취득한 후, 영국왕립예술학교(Royal College of Art)에서 조각 전공으로 석사과정을 마쳤다. 그는 1990년대 후반부터 영국을 주요무대로 작업해오다가 2000년대에 이르러 암스테르담, 파리, 이스탄불, 뉴욕 등 국제무대로 활동범위를 확장하였으며, 테이트(Tate Collection)와 산드레토 레 레바우덴고 재단(Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo) 등지에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 탈라 마다니는 오레건주립대학(Oregon State University)에서 정치학 및 비주얼아트를 전공하였으며, 이후 예일대학(Yale University)에서 회화 전공으로 석사학위를 취득하였다. 작가는 스톡홀롬의 현대미술관(Moderna Museet)을 비롯하여 뉴욕과 런던, 암스테르담 등 전세계의 주요미술기관에서 전시를 개최하며 가장 중요한 영페인터 중 한 명으로 급부상하였으며, 2005년 시클-콜링우드상(Schickle-Collingwood Prize, Yale University)과 2013년 캐더린 닥터로우 현대미술상(Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting) 등을 수상한 바 있다. 탈라 마다니는 LA에서, 나다니엘 멜로스는 암스테르담과 LA에서 거주하며 작업한다.
PKM Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition by the young Iranian-born artist Tala Madani (1981) and British-born artist Nathaniel Mellors (1974) from March 28th to May 9th, 2014. As their first time presenting their work in Korea, this exhibition displays recent paintings by Madani and video and sculptural works by Mellors. The two artists will be present at the opening reception.
Since early 2000s, the internationally-celebrated artist Tala Madani has been exploring issues of cultural and sexual identities deeply rooted in contemporary society through her poignant paintings with narrative element. Evocative of comic drawings or magazine illustrations, Madani’s paintings in simple colors and forms portray male and female stereotypes that are traditionally been expected, and question the common social conventions.
Nathaniel Mellors’ work, especially his video, text, and performance works charged with theatricality and black humor, also explores the common acquired social conventions. His 22-minute video The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview is based on a fictitious encounter between a Neanderthal being and a future being, and deals with issues of power, class, and communication. Mellors’ influential works of diverse medium powerfully stir social discourse on the relations of dynamics in culture and power. In this exhibition, Mellors presents works of various genres including video, sculpture and print.
Nathaniel Mellors received his BFA from The Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, University of Oxford, and MFA in Sculpture from Royal College of Art, UK. Since late 1990s, Mellors has shown his work mainly in England, then started to exhibit internationally in Amsterdam, Paris, Istanbul and New York in 2000s. His works are in Tate Collection and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Tala Madani majored in Political Science and Visual Art at Oregon State University, and received her MFA in Painting from Yale University. Madani has exhibited her works in major art institutions around the world including Moderna Museet in Stokholm, Sweden, and New York, London, and Amsterdam, and is recognized internationally as one of the most influential young painters of this generation. She was awarded Schickle-Collingwood Prize from Yale University in 2005 and Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting in 2013. Madani lives and works in LA, and Mellors lives and works in LA and Amsterdam.
