한국 기하 추상의 선구자, 서승원 화백의 작품을 만날 수 있는 기획전 《한국 실험미술 1960-70년대》가 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 개막했습니다.
솔로몬 R. 구겐하임미술관 뉴욕과 국립현대미술관이 공동 주최한 본 전시는 1960-70년 당대 국내 사회문화사를 토대로 29명의 ‘젊은 그들’이 이끈 실험미술의 움직임을 다각적으로 살피며, 그 역사와 의미를 조명합니다.
《한국청년작가연립전》(1967)에서 처음 공개된 서승원 화백의 <동시성 67-1>은 전위적 실험미술의 초기 양상으로 본 전시에서 소개됩니다. 본 작품은 국전 중심의 제도권 미술계에 대한 반발과 앵포르멜의 어둡고 격적정인 추상에 대한 도발로 선보여진 밝고 이지적인 ‘기하학적 추상’의 대표작으로 한국 미술에 새로운 전망을 터주었다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
전시는 7월 16일 까지 진행되며, 이후 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관(2023. 9. 1. – 2024. 1. 7.)과 LA 해머미술관(2024. 2. 11. – 5. 11.)을 순회합니다.
PKM Gallery proudly announce Suh Seung-Won, the pioneer of Korean geometric abstraction, is participating the current exhibition, Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s-1970s held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.
Co-organized with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the MMCA exhibition examines the Korean Experimental art in the 1960s and 1970s lead by 29 "young people." The exhibition seeks to identify the development and art historical significance of this movement within the social and cultural context of the days.
In Only the Young, Suh Seung-Won's Simultaneity 67-1, first exhibited at the groundbreaking exhibition, Union Exhibition of Korean Young Artists (1967), is introduced as the early-staged example of Experimental art. Opposing the artistic establishment of the time centered on the National Art Exhibition as well as protesting against the dark and passionate mainstreamed Informel approach, the work represents the bright and intellectual “geometric abstraction” which ushered a new vision for the Korean art.
The exhibition will travel to Guggenheim, New York (Sep.1, 2023 – Jan.7, 2024) and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (Feb. 11 – May 11, 2024) following the exhibition in MMCA Seoul, closing on June 16.
