PKM 갤러리는 11월 11일부터 12월 13일까지 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스, 회화, 사진, 영상 등 다양한 장르의 작업을 추구해온 젊은 작가 이원우(b.1981)의 개인전 《Welcome, Take Care》를 선보인다.
이원우는 홍익대학교에서 조소를 전공하고 런던왕립학교(Royal College of Art)에서 석사를 취득하였으며, 삶의 여러 가지 경험에서 포착한 요소들을 유쾌하게 이용하여 현실의 환기를 이끌어내는 작가이다. 본 전시에는 철과 알루미늄, 클레이 등의 다양한 재료를 사용한 조각과 회화 작품들을 선보인다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 《Welcome, Take Care》이라는 전시 타이틀로 관람객과의 대화를 이끌어낸다. 환영('Welcome')과 배웅('Take Care')의 두 메시지 사이에서 갤러리 공간은 작가와 관람객, 그리고 관람객과 관람객 간 다양한 대화가 발생하는 소통의 장으로 변모한다. 그중 외모에 대한 현대인의 집착적 강박을 알루미늄 판넬에 투영시킨 <If you’re happy and you know it then your face will surely show it>, 형태의 왜곡으로 쓰러진 채 제시되는 코카콜라 오브제 <Fat Coke>, 아카데미 화풍의 유럽 풍경화의 전형성을 유머러스하게 비트는 <The day after boredom was born, The day after less boredom was born> 등 그 자체로 생명을 가진 듯한 이원우의 오브제들은 외부 세계를 관찰하는 작가의 진지한 시선을 신선하고 장난기 어린 형태 속에 형상화하여 블랙 유머와 아이러니의 미학으로 관객들을 초대한다. 특히 갤러리 공간을 점거한 듯한 철제판넬 너머 숨겨진 공간 속에서 반전의 분위기를 꾀하는 연출은 그가 초창기부터 이어온 퍼포먼스 속 작가 특유의 연극성과 유희를 이어간다. 이원우는 현재 국내외 주요 미술 관계자들로부터 호평을 이끌어내고 입지를 굳혀가고 있다.
그는 2012년 대안공간 루프에서 첫 번째 개인전을 개최하였으며, 이외에도 한가람미술관, 아트선재센터, 문래예술공장, 런던의 Pump House Gallery 등지에서 수차례 그룹전에 참가한 바 있다.
PKM Gallery proudly announces Welcome, Take Care, a solo exhibition by young artist Wonwoo Lee (b.1981) from November 11th to December 13th, 2013. Having received his BFA in sculpture from Hongik University, Korea, and MFA in sculpture from Royal College of Art in London, UK, Lee’s interdisciplinary art practice engages in different mediums including sculpture, installation, performance, painting, photography, and video, and delightfully interprets the various experiences of life into observations of reality. This exhibition displays sculptures and paintings of various material including steel, aluminum and clay.
Lee strikes up a conversation with his audience through the title of the exhibition Welcome, Take Care. Through the two greetings, the gallery space turns into a site of communication between the artist and the viewer, and between the viewers. Lee lulls the audience into aesthetics of black humor and irony through his works that seem to have a life of their own. In particular, some of his works in this exhibition — such as If You’re Happy and You Know It Then Your Face will Surely Show It, which is an aluminum panel that projects the human compulsive obsession on their appearance, the distorted Coca Cola in Fat Coke, and The Day After Boredom was Born and The Day After Less Boredom was Born, which put a humorous twist on the stereotypical academic European landscape paintings — are playful and original interpretations of the artist’s straightforward observation of the world that surrounds him. The artist’s distinctive way of staging the gallery space — in which a metal panel occupies the gallery space and the space beyond it presents a contradictory element — conveys the artist’s unique sense of theatricality and humor as demonstrated in his early performance works. Lee is becoming internationally acclaimed by major art galleries around the world. Having held his first solo exhibition at Alternative Space Loop in 2012, Lee has participated in numerous group exhibitions at Hangaram Art Gallery, Artsonje Museum, and Seoul Art Space Mullae in Korea, and at Pump House Gallery in London, UK.
