PKM Gallery | Bartleby Bickle & Meursault are pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Park Chan-Kyong, from April 29 to June 11, 2010. Exploring the sense of both loss and illusion surrounding Korean conceptions of utopia, the exhibition is made up of works that evince a philosophical and critical approach to issues of society, politics, history, and visual representation.
Park Chan-Kyong graduated from the department of Western painting at Seoul National University and received a master's degree in photography from California Institute of the Arts. Moving between the realms of fact and fiction, of reality and imagination, his work has been exhibited to growing acclaim in Berlin, Paris, and throughout Europe, Japan, and the U.S. He has participated in Gwangju Biennale (2002), as well as in group and solo shows at such venues as the Artsonje Center, Seoul (2004) and Atelier Hermès, Seoul (2008). He was the recipient of the Hermès Korea Art Prize in 2004. His work is in the collections of institutions in Korea and abroad, including Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Ansan, Korea; Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul; and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, Nantes.
This is the first solo exhibition of Park Chan-Kyong's work to be held at PKM Gallery | Bartleby Bickle & Meursault. It features the video work Sindoan as well as 28 new works, including a series of photographs of temples in and around Seoul, and various paintings, works on paper, and a sculptural installation inspired by Simcheongga—a well-known pansori work, a form of Korean folk narrative that is sung. The exhibition title, "Radiance," references the final passage from Simcheongga in which all the blind people, as well as earthly creatures, miraculously open their eyes at once. The scene is a depiction, at once dynamic and fervent, of an idea of a Korean utopia that has been transmitted through the generations. If the video work Sindoan, re-edited into four channels for this exhibition, deals with a specific, actual site of collective utopian aspirations in Korean history, the new paintings and photographs in the exhibition examine in a broader context the encounters and collisions of modernity with the utopian imagination in Korean culture.
For Park, "Radiance" constitutes a kind of "field study" of traditional Korean culture. But instead of considering traditional culture simply as a form of national or collective heritage to be preserved, he sees it as something that is unfamiliar, strange, at times an object of fear. He turns to totemic images of rocks and mountains, temples and stone-carved Buddhas, folk painting and pansori in his work, but he points up the tension between the sense of urgency and, ultimately, the sense of emptiness in the search for these things. The artist states, "Seoul, Korea, indeed the entire world now seem to be brightly lit, radiant. The night has become illuminated thanks to the electric light. But the enlightened society nevertheless continues to grow further distant from true light, vision, a sense of community. It is growing distant from even the imagination and memory of utopia."
PKM 갤러리와 Bartleby Bickle & Meursault 에서는 2010년 4월 29일부터 6월 11일까지 박찬경 (b. 1965)의 개인전 Radiance <광명천지> 전을 개최한다. '한국적 유토피아'에 대한 상실과 미망을 화두로 하는 이번 전시는 사회 정치적 이슈들과 역사와 재현의 문제에 대한 작가의 철학적 고찰과 비판적 사색이 드러나는 그 만의 독특한 작업들로 구성된다.
작가 박찬경은 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업하였으며 캘리포니아 예술대학 (California Institute of the Arts) 예술/사진 전공으로 석사학위를 취득하였다. 실재와 허구, 상상과 현실, 픽션과 논픽션을 넘나드는 미디어 작업을 통해 작가적 명성을 공고히 해온 박찬경은 베를린과 파리를 비롯한 유럽과 미국, 일본 등지에서 수회의 개인전과 그룹 전에 참가하였으며 광주 비엔날레(2002), 아트선재센터(2004), 아뜰리에 에르메스(2008) 등 다수의 국제 비엔날레와 주요 미술기관에서 전시를 가졌다. 지난 2004년도에는 에르메스 미술상을 수상하였으며 그의 작품은 서울시립미술관, 낭트현대미술관 (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes) 경기도 미술관등 국내외 유수의 기관에 소장되어있다.
전시의 제목 "광명천지"는 판소리 심청가의 마지막 대목에서 모든 맹인과 동물들까지 일시에 눈을 뜨는 장면 – "지어비금주수 (至於飛禽走獸)까지 일시에 눈을 떠서 광명천지가 되었구나!" – 에서 따온 말이다. 이 장면은 민간에 오래 전승되어 내려온 '한국적 유토피아'를 유쾌하고도 절절하게 그려낸다. 이 전시를 위해 4채널로 나누어 재 구성된 영상작품 신도안 (2008)이 계룡산 아래 구체적 현실로 존재했던 한국적 유토피아를 다룬 것이라면, 새로이 선보이게 될 작품은 회화, 사진, 설치 등의 다양한 매체를 통해 이러한 이상향의 상상력이 현대와 어떻게 만나고 또 충돌하는지에 대한 조금 더 보편적인 접근을 시도한다.
<광명천지>는 작가 박찬경이 그리는 일종의 '나의 문화유산 답사기'이다. 그러나 전통문화를 단순히 '계승 발전'시켜야 할 '좋은 우리 것'으로 보는 대신, 낯설고 이상하며, 때로 두려운 대상으로 본다. 작가는 작품을 위해 산과 바위, 절과 마애불, 판소리와 민화의 이미지를 차용하지만, 이들을 찾아 다니는 행위의 문화적인 절박성과 궁극적인 공허함 사이의 묘한 긴장을 연출한다.
이 전시는 PKM 갤러리와 BB&M 에서는 처음 열리는 박찬경의 개인전으로 신도안을 비롯하여 북한산과 서울의 사찰들을 촬영한 사진 시리즈, 판소리 <심청가>에서 영감을 받은 회화 및 설치작품 등 신작 28점이 선보일 예정이다. "세계, 한국, 서울은 이미 광명천지이다. 밤은 전기조명에 의해 밝아졌고, 눈과 머릿속까지 방송 영화 모니터에 의해 밝아졌다. 그러나 계몽된(en-lightened) 사회는 빛, 비전, 공동체로부터 멀어졌을 뿐만 아니라, 유토피아의 기억이나 상상으로부터도 멀어지고 있다." 이 같은 작가의 반성을 예술적 상상과 실천으로 승화시킨 이번 전시는 현대를 살아가는 관람자들로 하여금 사라져 보이지 않는 우리 안의 이상향을 새로이 눈을 뜨고 바라볼 수 있는 문화적 개안(開眼)의 기회를 제공할 것이다.
