PKM 갤러리는 2017년 4월 19일부터 6월 20일까지 덴마크 출신의 세계적 미술가 올라퍼 엘리아슨(Olafur Eliasson, 1967-)의 새로운 작품전 《공존을 위한 모델들(Models for coexistence)》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가가 PKM 갤러리에서 갖는 네 번째 개인전이다.
2003년 런던 테이트 모던(Tate Modern)의 터바인 홀(Turbine Hall)에서 인공 태양을 연출한 작가의 ’날씨 프로젝트(The Weather Project)’는 국제적으로 작품성을 인정받으며 그를 세계적 작가 반열에 오르게 하였다. 이후 덴마크 아로스 미술관(ARoS Museum)에 설치한 유리 전망대 와 뉴욕의 공공 설치작업으로 더욱더 주목을 받게 되었다. 2012년에는 프레데릭 오트슨(Frederik Ottesen)과 함께 태양광 램프와 이동식 충전기를 이용해 개발 도상국에 안정적으로 전기를 공급하기 위한 을 창립하였고, 2014년 건축가 세바스티안 베만(Sebastian Behmann)과 를 건립하여 예술학과 건축학 사이의 학제적이고 실험적인 공공 프로젝트에도 적극적으로 참여하고 있다. 뉴욕의 현대 미술관(MoMA) 개인전, 베를린의 마틴 그로피우스 바우 미술관(Martin-Gropius-Bau) 전시를 거쳐 2016년 세계적인 거장만이 초대되는 파리 베르사유 궁전에서 폭포, 안개, 거울, 빛 경관 등을 이용하여 궁전 안과 밖의 공간적 개입의 연속을 통해 관객으로 하여금 오브제와 감각적 상호작용을 가능하게 하는 전시를 성공적으로 마쳤다. 특히 서울의 삼성 미술관 리움에서 2016년 10월 개관하여 최근까지 열린 그의 작품전은 많은 관람객의 커다란 호응을 얻어냈다. ‘관람객의 참여’를 중요한 모티브로 삼는 그는 “사람들이 작품이 포함된 공간의 어떤 한 단면과 교감할 수 있다면 이는 감각의 결과로서 다양한 차이를 만든다.”라고 밝히며 그 특유의 예술적 활동을 정의했다.
이번 PKM 갤러리 전시에는 특히 태양광 패널을 갤러리 옥상 정원에 직접 설치하고 그에 연결된 케이블을 통해 생산되는 전기에 의한 광선과 그림자의 스펙트럼을 보여주는 대형 신작 조각 <태양의 중심 탐험 The exploration of the center of the sun>이 소개된다. 이 작품은 복잡한 비대칭적 유리 다면체로 이루어져 있으며 다양한 색깔을 지닌 우주 속의 별의 배열을 암시하는 끊임없는 빛의 반복을 통해 관람객들이 여러 각도에서 다양한 시각적 인지를 갖도록 고무시킨다. 또한, 단단한 유리구슬들이 모여 지름 약 230센티의 커다란 원을 이루며 유리 구의 안쪽 거울 면이 작품을 감상하는 이들과 그 주변의 이미지를 셀 수 없이 증식시켜 빛과 이미지의 반사를 보여주는 벽면 조각 작품 <시각적 조정 Visual mediation>과 스테인리스 파이프가 전체 지름 2미터의 고리 구조를 이루는 행잉 조각 <끊임없는 도넛 Endless doughnut> 또한 ‘무한 반복’의 아름다움을 보여준다. 벽면 작품 <해변의 조약돌들(패턴 마루) Pebbles on the beach(parquet)>은 나무를 주요 매체로 사용하며, 오각형을 중심으로 이루어진 기하학적 패턴의 끊임없는 반복으로 3차원적 다면체의 효과를 만들어내어, 시각적 유희를 통해 관람객들의 패턴 질서에 대한 즉각적인 이해를 지연시킨다. 특히 이 작품은 다양한 패턴이 전체의 큰 한 면을 공유하지만, 보는 이가 하나의 유닛과 또 다른 유닛 하나를 동시에 교대로 집중할 수 없도록 만드는데 바로 이 점은 이번 전시의 주제인 ‘공존(Coexistence)’의 본질적 의미를 단적으로 경험할 수 있게 하는 핵심 요소이기도 하다.
이번 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 PKM 갤러리 전시 개막 행사는 4월 19일에 진행되며 작가는 개막 행사 참석을 위해 내한할 예정이다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present Models for coexistence, an exhibition of new works by the internationally acclaimed Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, from April 20 to June 20, 2017. This is Eliasson’s fourth solo exhibition to be held at PKM Gallery.
Eliasson grew up in Iceland and Denmark, and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1995, he moved to Berlin and founded Studio Olafur Eliasson, which today encompasses some ninety craftsmen, specialised technicians, architects, archivists, administrators, programmers, art historians, and cooks. Eliasson’s unique art practice embraces a scientific outlook as well as intuitive responses; his sensitivity to natural phenomena has been shaped by his many journeys to Iceland.
Eliasson’s The weather project, a striking artificial sun shown in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in 2003, received praise from around the world and placed Eliasson in the spotlight of the international art scene. He was subsequently celebrated for the New York City Waterfalls, installed on the shorelines of Manhattan and Brooklyn in 2008, and the 360-degree glass walkway Your rainbow panorama, installed on the rooftop of ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark in 2011. Ice Watch brought melting icebergs from Greenland to Copenhagen in 2014 and to Paris on the occasion of the COP21 Climate Conference in 2015. In 2012 Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen founded Little Sun, a social business and global project that provides sustainable energy in the form of solar powered lamps and mobile chargers to communities without access to electricity; in 2014 Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann founded Studio Other Spaces, an international office for interdisciplinary and experimental building projects and works in public space. Following his solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2008 and the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, in 2010, Eliasson was the guest artist in 2016 at the palace of Versailles, where he created a series of spatial interventions inside the palace and in the garden, including an enormous artificial waterfall that cascaded into the Grand Canal. Eliasson’s exhibition The parliament of possibilities at Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, from September 2016 until February of this year, was greatly praised by a large audience.
Repetition, illusion, and geometry feature prominently in the new exhibition by Eliasson at PKM Gallery. Models for coexistence presents a large new sculptural work, The exploration of the centre of the sun, in which light – powered by a solar panel installed in the gallery building’s rooftop garden – is reflected and filtered into a spectrum of colours by panes of colour-effect-filter glass that form an intriguingly asymmetrical polyhedron. These panes of special glass multiply the light countless times, producing a galaxy-like array of shifting stars in a variety of colours that invites the viewer to move around the work and examine it from multiple angles.
The beauty of infinite repetition is also captured in the work Visual mediation, a wall-mounted sculptural work in which a circular arrangement of eighty solid glass spheres – some clear, some covered to different degrees on their inner surface by a coating of reflective silver – produce multiple simultaneous reflections of the viewers and their surroundings that amplify every movement. In Endless doughnut, developed in 2001 together with mathematician Einar Thorsteinn, a steel pipe coils repeatedly around a central void to form an open ring measuring two metres in diameter.
The wall piece Pebbles on the beach (parquet), composed of small tiles of fifteen different types of wood, presents a complex, repeating geometric pattern that produces an illusion of numerous three-dimensional forms tumbling through space. Different forms take precedence depending on the focus of the viewer’s attention – visual play that complicates the viewer’s immediate understanding of the pattern. The key is that certain tiles represent a face of two different forms simultaneously, making it impossible for the viewer to separate them from one another. Observation of this sharing of a single face by multiple forms becomes a direct experience of ‘coexistence’ – the subject of this exhibition.
The opening for Olafur Eliasson’s Models of coexistence at PKM Gallery will be held on April 19, 2017. The artist will be present at the gallery for the opening.
