PKM 갤러리는 2015년 8월 26일부터 9월 25일까지 한국을 대표하는 세계적 현대 미술가 이불(b.1964)의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2010년 PKM 갤러리 전시 이후 5년 만에 개최되는 국내 갤러리 개인전으로 작가의 신작 조각과 드로잉 작업 등 10여 점을 선보일 예정이다.
이불은 1980년대 후반부터 퍼포먼스, 조각, 설치, 회화, 드로잉에 이르는 다양한 매체를 통해 사회적 이슈에 대한 작가의 생각을 파격적이고 강렬하게 전달함으로써 비평가들의 호응은 물론 깊이 있는 미감이 느껴지는 작품들을 제작해왔다. 작가는 여성인 자신의 몸을 사용한 퍼포먼스를 통해 여성을 억압하는 당시의 사회 구조에 대한 비판적 시각을 강렬한 메시지로 드러내며 이름을 알렸다. 퍼포먼스 의상을 비롯한 작품에 사용된 구슬, 비즈 같은 장식적 요소는 가내수공업이라는 매개를 통해 여성성을 상징하며 주제를 부각시켰다. 퍼포먼스를 통해 관람객과 직접적으로 소통해왔던 이불은 1990년대 후반, <사이보그(Cyborg)> 시리즈를 선보이며 이전보다 묵시적이고 함축적인 구조의 조각, 설치 작업으로 관람객과 거리를 두는 동시에 작업의 지평을 넓혔다.
이불은 현실과 이상에 대한 탐구를 시작한 <사이보그(Cyborg)> 시리즈에 이어 이상사회를 향한 인간의 열망을 형상화한 <나의 거대 서사(Mon Grand Récit)> 시리즈 중 하나로 <인피니티(Infinity)>를 선보였다. 장식적이면서도 건축적으로 보여지는 작품은 관람객이 직접 작품을 경험하게 하는 구조로 주제에 대한 거시적 시각과 미시적 시각을 동시에 제안한다. <인피니티(Infinity)> 시리즈에 사용된 LED 조명과 거울조각, 크리스털은 시각적 미감을 제공함과 동시에 끝없이 반사되는 관람객 자신의 모습과 작품 형상을 통해 미래와 인간 스스로에 대한 성찰을 이끌어내며 더욱 지적인 작품으로 완성되었다.
이번에 발표될 작품들은 거울의 무한 중첩의 이미지로 거대한 공간감을 이끌어낸 작가의 기존 설치 작업 <인피니티(Infinity)> 시리즈와 같은 개념의 선상에 있되, 양면 거울과 LED 조명, 내부의 크리스털 구조물이 서로 결합하여 한층 더 아름다움을 발하는 다양한 크기의 천장에 매단 형태의(hanging) 조각들이다. 미래도시의 모습을 연상시키는 형상들이 거울에 의해 끊임없이 중복되며 불멸에 대한 인간의 갈망을 공간적 개념으로 표현하는 이불 작가의 <인피니티(Infinity)> 시리즈는 2012년 모리미술관(Mori Art Museum)에서 개최된 회고전에서 크게 주목을 받은 바 있으며 현재 오스트리아 인스브루크에 위치한 스와로브스키 크리스털 월드(Swarovski Kristallwelten)에도 오로지 스와로브스키 크리스털만을 재료로 사용한 대형 <인피니티(Infinity)> 작업이 설치되어 있다. 지난해 국립현대미술관 서울관의 현대차 프로젝트 첫 번째 작가로 선정되어 이 시리즈의 초대형 설치작업을 선보인 바 있다.
홍익대학교에서 조각을 전공한 이불은 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA), 뉴욕 뉴 뮤지엄(New Museum), 파리 까르티에 현대미술재단 미술관(Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain), 서울 국립현대미술관 등지에서 개인전을 개최하였다. 도쿄 모리미술관(Mori Art Museum)을 시작으로 룩셈부르크 현대미술관(MUDAM), 스페인 카스텔로 현대미술관(EACC) 등을 거쳐 올 10월 개막하는 캐나다 밴쿠버 갤러리(Vancouver Art Gallery)에서의 개인순회전이 이어지고 있으며 역시 올해 10월 파리의 팔레 드 도쿄(Palais de Tokyo)에서의 프로젝트 전시가 예정되어 있다. 그의 작품은 현재 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관(Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum)과 런던 테이트 모던(Tate Modern)의 소장품 전시에 출품되어 있다. 제 48회 베니스 비엔날레 특별상, 김세중 조각상, 제 10회 광주 비엔날레 눈 예술상 등을 수상하였으며 작가의 작품은 현재 서울 삼성미술관 리움(Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art), 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관(Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(Los Angeles County Museum of Art), 런던의 테이트 모던(Tate Modern), 도쿄 모리미술관(Mori Art Museum) 등 전세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되어 있다.
PKM Gallery presents the solo exhibition of Lee Bul, one of Korea’s representative contemporary artists. This exhibition, featuring more than 10 new sculptures and drawings, is her first solo exhibition in Korea since her last exhibition at PKM Gallery in 2010.
Since the late 1980s, Lee Bul has been delivering her thoughts on social issues through various mediums such as performance art, sculptures, installations, paintings, and drawings, captivating the praise of critics and creating pieces with a profound aesthetic appeal. She rose to fame after involving her own body in performances that denounced the social exploitation of women. The decorative usage of marbles and beads in her handmade performance outfits symbolized femininity to emphasize her point. Lee Bul, who had been directly communicating with her audience through her performances, unveiled the new series in the late 1990s, distancing herself from her audience and widening the horizons of her work into more subtle and metaphorical sculptures.
The series, which began the exploration of themes such as reality and idealism, was followed by the series, a work embodying human aspiration towards a utopian society, and the series, a subset of . These works are equally decorative and architectural, allowing the audience to directly interact with the works, and suggest both macroscopic and microscopic viewpoints. The LED lights, mirror shards, and crystals used in the series provide visual pleasure as well as provoking introspection on the future and humanity itself, bringing the work to a more erudite conclusion.
The new works retain the vast illusion of space pulled forth by infinitely mirroring images seen in the artist’s previous series, but the addition of hanging crystal pieces with double-sided mirrors and LED lights brings renewed beauty to the works. In the series, figures reminiscent of futuristic cityscapes are repeated ad infinitum in the mirrors, reflecting humanity’s yearning for immortality; the series was shown to much critical acclaim in the artist’s retrospective at the Mori Art Museum in 2012, and a piece from the series made entirely of Swarovski crystals is currently installed in the Swarovski Kristallwelten in Austria. Last year, Lee Bul was designated as the first artist for the Hyundai Motors Project at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, where a massive installation of hers was shown.
Lee Bul, who majored in sculpture at Hongik University, has held solo exhibitions at the MoMA in New York, the New Museum in New York, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul. Her solo exhibitions have been touring the world, beginning at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, followed by the MUDAM in Luxembourg and the EACC in Spain, to arrive in the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada opening this October. Additional plans have been made to display her projects at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, also for this October. Her works are currently shown in collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Tate Modern in London. She has received the Special Award at the 48th Venice Biennale, the Kim Se Joong Sculpture Award and Noon Award at the 10th Gwangju Biennale, among others, and her works are included in the collections of numerous highly-reputed art institutions such as the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, the Tate Modern in London, and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.
