PKM 갤러리는 독창적 작품세계로 국제 미술계에서 큰 명성을 다져온 한국의 대표적 미술가 전광영 화백의(b.1944) 개인전 《전광영: WORKS 1975-2018》을 개최한다. 이번 작품전은 작가의 초기 작업인 70년대 추상 평면회화 작업부터 작가 고유의 독창성이 두드러지는 한지를 사용한 입체적 회화 신작들까지 총망라한다.
특히, 작가의 <집합(Aggregation)>이라는 타이틀의 작품들은 한지로 섬세하게 싸고 묶은 작은 삼각 오브제들을 천연 염색 기법으로 물들인 후 촘촘하게 커다란 하나를 이루는 집합체로 형상화한 작업이다. 이러한 제작 과정을 통하여 작가는 한국 사회 속의 개인과 집단이 경험한 다양한 역사적 사실들 즉, 무수한 시 공간 속에 해체된 이야기들을 동양 특유의 ‘포용’적 사고로 다시 ‘결집’하여 그 총체적 아름다움을 구현함으로써 한국적 정체성을 국제 미술계가 공감하는 보편적 미학의 언어로 풀어내는 데 성공하였다.
이번 개인전은 이전의 여러 국내 전시들을 통해 발표한 작품들과는 달리 다양한 색상으로 화려하게 천연 염색한 한지 오브제 조각 회화가 주를 이루는데, 함께 전시되는 작가의 아름다운 초기작 색면추상 회화 작품들을 통해 현재의 작업들이 가진 화려한 색감과 입체적 형태감의 뿌리를 보여줌으로써 작가가 오랜 세월 추구해온 긴 작업 여정의 비전을 한자리에서 살필 수 있다는 점에서도 이번 전시는 매우 의미가 깊다.
전광영 화백은 홍익대학교 미술대학을 졸업하고, 미국 필라델피아 미술대학원 회화과에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 미국 얼드리치 현대 미술관, 뉴욕 로버트 밀러 갤러리, 런던 애널리 주다 파인 아트, 브뤼셀의 보고시앙 재단, 뮤지엄 드 리드, 도쿄 모리 아트센터, 과천 국립현대미술관 등 국내외 유명 미술관과 갤러리에서 개인전을 가진 바 있으며, 올가을엔 한국 작가 최초로 뉴욕 브루클린 미술관에서 개인전 개최가 예정되어 있다. 활발한 국제적인 예술 활동으로 한국 현대 미술의 독창성을 널리 알리고 그 공로를 인정받아 2009년 ‘대한민국문화예술상’ 미술 부문 대통령 상을 수상하였다.

PKM Gallery is pleased to present KWANG YOUNG CHUN: WORKS 1975–2018, a solo exhibition of one of Korea’s greatest artists, Kwang Young Chun, who has successfully established himself as an internationally renowned artist with his unique world of art works. The works in this exhibition span his artistic practice from the 1970’s which include his abstract two-dimensional paintings to his very recent three-dimensional paintings made from wrapped Hanji, which best represent Chun’s exceptional artistic creativity and uniqueness.
Chun’s Aggregation series in particular, consist of small triangular shapes wrapped in Hanji, of which are then dyed with natural colors, and these densely clustered triangular shapes form a piece of work as an ‘aggregation.’ Through this work process, the artist has succeeded in unravelling his Korean identity with his universal language of aesthetic that has strongly empathized with the international art world. By making reference to different histories of the individual and the many within the Korean society that ultimately ‘aggregate’ the disaggregated stories from innumerable time periods with a unique oriental sense of embracement Chun’s work is materialized into a beautiful piece of Aggregation.
Unlike any other exhibitions held by the artist, this exhibition is mainly composed of Chun’s colorfully dyed Hanji objet/ sculptural paintings, along with his early beautiful abstract paintings with colors. These early paintings with vibrant colors are the roots of Chun’s recent colorful, three-dimensional paintings, which will provide the viewers with an invaluable opportunity to observe the artist’s visions throughout his long journey as an artist in one place at the same time.
Kwang Young Chun graduated from Hongik University and completed his MFA in Painting at Philadelphia College of Art. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at many world renowned institutions around the world including The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum(Ridgefield, CT, USA), Robert Miller Gallery(New York, NY, USA), Annely Juda Fine Art(London, United Kingdom), Boghossian Foundation(Brussels, Belgium), Museum de Reede(Antwerp, Belgium), Mori Arts Center Gallery(Tokyo, Japan) and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(Seoul, Korea). In the fall of 2018, Chun’s solo exhibition is scheduled to open at Brooklyn Museum in New York, which is the very first solo show of a Korean artist at the museum. The artist has been awarded the prestigious Presidential Prize at the 41st Korean Culture and Art Prize in 2009, in recognition of his contribution to promoting the originality of Korean contemporary art with his international artistic activities.
