PKM Gallery is pleased to present Acquired Nature, a solo exhibition by the artist Koo Hyunmo, an artist celebrated for his distinct poetic lyricism and spatial approach and methodology to material. This solo exhibition, held in 4 years since Koo’s last solo exhibition Sajik-dong held at PKM Gallery in 2014, stages a comprehensive outlook on the artist’s recent oeuvre, from Koo’s new installations and sculptural works to his drawings and maquettes that sketch out the fragments of the artist’s ideas and work production process.
Koo’s penetrating works blur and traverse between the boundaries of two seemingly dichotomous concepts such as reality and fiction, and principle and phenomenon. While Koo reels in places from his personal memory or home into the public space of the exhibition and refresh our recognition of what is public and private, inside and outside, and space and time, he also transforms natural or everyday materials such as paper, branches and stones into works of art. This flexibility enables the audience to become involved in the interpretation of the work in a more free manner, and partakes in the ‘temporal’ journey of his work.
This exhibition is meaningful in that Koo explores beyond the works he has previously presented, expanding his worldview concerning ideas of “artificial and natural”. In the age of ‘Anthropocene’, where human activities become an important element in the changes that take place in the global environment and manmade objects actually become nature in daily life, the artist throws endless questions as if the distinction between artificial/art work and nature is still effective.
Koo’s work presented in Aquired Nature delicately weaves together fragmets of nature infiltrated in human life, such as wind, moon and clouds, contextualizing itself in ‘posthumanism’ which envisions the coexistence of human and nature. Artificial but not unnatural, his ‘aquired nature’ in this exhibition reflects the site-specificity of the PKM Gallery annex where the gallery’s large glass window fully captures nature. In this context, Aquired Nature offers a special opportunity through which to meditate upon the relationship between human and nature.
Koo received his BFA degree in Ceramics at Hongik University and BFA in Sculpture as well as MFA under the direction of Professor Martin Hornet at Dresden Academy of Fine Art. Koo mainly works in Berlin, Liepzieg, Dresden, etc., and has participatd in exhibitions held at leading art institutions in Korea including Arko Art Center, Sungkok Art Museum, OCI Museum of Art and Art Center NABI. In 2009, Koo received the Art Award from MPI-CBG, the birthplace of Nobel laureates as well as an institution devoted to encouraging interdisciplinary research in the fields of basic science, humanities and arts. Koo’s work is in the collection at Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

PKM 갤러리는 특유의 시적 서정성과 재료에 대한 공감각적 접근 방식으로 주목받아온 구현모(b.1974) 작가의 개인전 《후천적 자연(Acquired Nature)》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2014년 PKM 갤러리 개인전 '사직동' 이후 4년 만에 열리는 개인전으로 설치와 조각 신작에서부터 작가의 아이디어 단상과 작품 제작 과정을 엿볼 수 있는 드로잉과 마케트(maquette; 작품의 준비 모형)에 이르기까지, 작가의 근래 작품세계를 총체적으로 아우른다.
구현모는 실재와 허구, 원리와 현상 등 표면상 이분법적으로 보이는 두 개념의 경계를 흐트러뜨리거나 그 사이를 오가는 작업을 예민하게 선보여왔다. 집 또는 개인적 추억의 장소를 전시장이라는 공적 공간으로 불러들여 공과 사, 안과 밖, 시공간에 대한 인식을 새롭게 하는 한편, 종이, 나뭇가지, 돌멩이 등 자연적이거나 일상적인 재료들을 미적 작품으로 전환시키기도 했다. 이러한 유연함으로 인해 관객은 보다 자유로이 작품의 해석에 개입하며 그의 작업의 '시간'적 여정에 함께하게 된다.
이번 전시는 작가가 이전에 발표한 작업들에서 나아가, "인공과 자연"이라는 보다 넓은 개념으로 확장된 작가의 세계관을 살필 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 크다. 인류의 활동이 지구환경의 변화에 주요한 원인이 되고, 인간의 가공품이 일상의 자연이 되는 '인간의 시대(Anthropocene)'에 작가는 인공/예술품과 자연의 구분이 여전히 유효한지 끊임없는 질문을 던진다.
바람, 달, 구름 등 인간의 삶에 스민 자연의 모습을 조심스럽게 엮어낸 구현모의 이번 작업은 인간과 자연의 공존을 꿈꾸는 '포스트휴머니즘'의 맥락과도 맞닿아 있다. 본 전시를 통해 공개되는 인위적이지만 작위적이지 않은 그의 '후천적 자연'들은 통유리창 너머 자연을 오롯이 담아내는 PKM 갤러리 별관의 장소적 특성과도 어우러져 관객으로 하여금 인간과 자연의 관계를 재고하는 특별한 계기를 선사하게 될 것이다.
구현모는 홍익대학교 도예과와 드레스덴 예술학교(Dresden Academy of Fine Art) 조소과를 졸업하고, 마틴 호너트 교수(Prof. Martin Hornet)에게서 마이스터슐러 학위를 취득했다. 독일의 베를린, 라이프치히, 드레스덴 등지에서 활발하게 활동해 왔으며, 아르코미술관, 성곡미술관, OCI미술관, 아트센터 나비 등 유수의 미술기관에서 개최하는 전시에 참여했다. 2009년에는 노벨 수상자들의 산지이자 기초과학, 인문학, 예술 등 다학제 간 연구를 독려하는 막스플랑크연구소(MPI-CBG)에서 미술상을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 드레스덴 국립미술관(Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden)에 소장되어 있다.
