피케이엠갤러리는 2008년 8월 22일부터 9월 20일까지 배영환 개인전 "insomnia(불면증)"을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2005년 "남자의 길" 이후 3년만의 개인전으로 배영환의 이전 작업과 연결되는 동시에 그간의 새로운 예술적 시도와 고민을 보여주는 평면과 설치 작업들을 선보인다.
한국 현대미술의 차세대 주역 중 한명으로 주목을 받아온 배영환은 베니스비엔날레, 광주비엔날레, 부산비엔날레를 비롯한 유수 국내외 전시를 통해 작품성과 국제적 가능성을 인정받고 있으며, 2004년 대한민국예술상 오늘의 젊은 예술가상을 수상하고, 2006년 에르메스 미술상 최종 후보자로 선정되기도 했다. 설치, 회화, 사진, 미디어 등을 조합한 다양한 작업으로 일상과 미술을 소통시키고, 개념과 형태적 미학 사이의 조화를 구현하는 그만의 독특한 작업으로 주목을 받아왔다. 포스트민중미술의 대표적 작가로서 배영환은 한국의 근,현대사를 다룬 "유행가 시리즈," "노숙자 수첩," "남자의 길" 등 대안공간과 거리 현장미술 중심의 활동을 통해 예리한 사회의식와 현장성을 보여주었으며, "노숙자 수첩," "갓길 프로젝트," 청각장애학생들과의 협업으로 완성한 대형벽화 "세상에서 가장 아름다움 말" 등 실험적이고 실천적인 공공미술을 진행 하기도 했다. 이와 동시에 국내외 비엔날레, 에르메스 미술상전, 국제아트페어등의 참여를 통해 예술과 대중, 주류와 비주류의 경계를 넘나드는 다양한 활동을 펼쳐왔다.
배영환의 예전 작업이 주로 개인과 사회의 표면적 접점에서 발생하는 사회적 구체성의 내러티브에 몰두했다면, 이번 개인전의 "insomnia (불면증)" 시리즈는 다분히 내면적이고 잠재적인 개인과 사회의 접점을 주시하며 보다 근본적인 인간적 질문에 정면으로 응시한다. 배영환의 'insomnia (불면증)' 시리즈는 술병을 깨서 만든 유리 파편과 조명으로 만들어진 부엉이 모양의 샹들리에, 규격에 맞지 않는 자로 이루어진 조각과 이와 함께 설치될 평면 작업 등이 등장한다. 전작들에 비해 더욱 간결하고 명확해진 배영환의 이번 전시는 명상적인 느낌과 심리적인 경험을 관객들에게 전달하는 한편, 이전의 "유행가," "남자의 길" 시리즈가 통속적이고 신파적인 제목을 통해 한국 사회의 한 단면을 예리하게 포착하고 비평했던 것처럼, "insomnia (불면증)"이란 제목을 통해 현대인의 삶 속에 공통적으로 존재하는 불안과 정체성에 대한 끝없는 회의를 암시적으로 드러내고자 한다.
이번 전시에 맞추어 samuso에서 기획한 배영환의 모노그라피 "97-08 배영환"이 출간될 예정이다. 97년부터 현재에 이르기까지 작가의 작품세계를 주요 비평글과 이미지를 통해 한층 더 깊이 이해할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
PKM GALLERY presents Bae Young-whan's solo exhibition "insomnia" from August 22 to September 20, 2008. This exhibition shows Bae's most recent works since his last solo exhibition "The Way of Man" in 2005.
Regarded as one of the most significant artists among the young generation of Korean contemporary art, Bae Young-whan has participated in many important international art exhibitions including Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale and Busan Biennale. He was awarded Today's Young Artist Award from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2004, and in 2006 he was selected as one of the finalists for Hermes Korea Art Award.
Encompassing various media and methods of installation, sculpture, painting, photography and video, his work bridges everyday life and art through a unique aesthetic language that achieves a subtle balance between concept and visual presentation.
Bae's previous works "Pop Song" and "The Way of Man" series addressed to Korea's modern and contemporary history manifesting his keen social consciousness and sense of contemporaneity, which entitled him as the representative of Korea's post-Minjoong Art (People's Art). Also, Bae's public art projects "Minority Project – Pocketbook for Homeless," "Side-road Project" and "The Most Beautiful Language in the World" produced in collaboration with a group of students from Seoul National School for the Deaf demonstrate his continuous artistic intervention in social issues. Bae Young-whan's artistic versatility and experimental approach interestingly cross between art and public, mainstream and underground.
While Bae's previous works have delved into social narratives that emerge from an encounter between an individual and society, his recent works in "insomnia" turn into more introspective and fundamental human issues arising around the potential contact point between individuals and the society. The "insomnia" series comprises owl chandeliers made of shards of various wine and liquor bottles, wooden sculptures composed of rulers with arbitrary scales and wall pieces. These works in "insomnia" beautifully suggest feeling of anxiety, ceaseless query and skepticism on identity that we commonly suffer living in this contemporary society.
During the exhibition, the first comprehensive monograph of Bae Young-whan's work "97-08 Bae Young-whan" will be published by samuso.
